San Joaquin County Filed Survey Map Index

Original San Joaquin County Map Index

The San Joaquin County Surveyor used to maintain a hard copy index of all the field survey maps in San Joaquin County. This  index was also known as the “Dickey Book”. The County Surveyor no longer maintains this index. The hard copy filed survey map index was replaced with the San Joaquin County Land Surveyor Records System. Although there are some benefits to the new online system of searching and downloading maps, there are also some problems with the way the online system has been set up.

Replacement San Joaquin County Map Index

Redefined Horizons works to maintain a digital index that will mimics the old hard copy index. The advantage it has over the current digital index used by the County is that it shows the acutal filed survey map footprints. The digital index maintained by Redefined Horizons includes CAD files and ESRI Shapefiles of the filed survey maps that only appear in the new online system for searching and downloading maps, and are not found in the old hard copy map index. The work of maintaining the index is done by Landon Blake, the owner of Redefined Horizons, as a volunteer member of the CLSA Central Valley Chapter.

Replacement San Joaquin County Map Index Limitations

The index created by Redefined Horizons does not contain subdivision maps filed for cemetery plots or control surveys filed as record of survey maps.

Replacement San Joaquin County Map Index License

Redefined Horizons is releasing the index data into the public domain through the CC0 license, which means you can basically do what you want with it.

Index Data Download

You can download the index in CAD and GIS formats. The GIS data is made available as ESRI shapefiles. The CAD data is made available as DWG and DXF files.

GIS File Downloads
The files with maps indexed before January 1, 2012 have a more limited attribute set. The files with
maps indexed after January 1, 2012 have an expanded attribute set. The expanded attribute set includes attributes to store the name and license number of the surveyor filing the map, for example. You will need to download BOTH sets of files to see all the map footprints in the Redefined Horizons index.

CAD File Downloads
These CAD files also contain the data from the TIGER files for roads, railroads, and hydrography
in San Joaquin County. This allows the surveyor to view the maps in context to these other topographic features. You can download either CAD file using the following links:

Autodesk AutoCAD Version 2012 DWG file of Filed Survey Maps In San Joaquin County Not Currently In Dickey Book Hard Copy Index. (This file has embedded object data and text labels for the filed survey map polylines.)

Autodesk AutoCAD Version 2000 DXF file of Filed Survey Maps In San Joaquin County Not Currently In Dickey Book Hard Copy Index. (This file has text labels for the filed survey map polylines.)

If you are using an AutoCAD product and the version 2010 drawing file you will find the map type, book number, and page number of each filed survey map in the drawing is stored as object data. You should be able to see this object data when you look at the properties for the polyline that represents the map outline. This data may not be visible in all CAD software, or when using the
DXF file above. The DXF file have text labels listing the map type, book, and page number for most
of the maps. This is the same information stored as object data in the 2010 DWG file.

Dickey Book Hard Copy Filed Survey Map Index – Sheet Scans

San Joaquin County has created high-resolution digital scans of the sheets in the hard copy filed survey map index, or “Dickey Book”. These scans will replace the digital photos Redefined Horizons had taken of each index sheet, and are of much better quality. You can download the scans from the San Joaquin County Land Survey Records web portal, or you can download them using the links below. Each of the zip files below contains a set of the scans from the book.

The zip files are large. Some of them are over 60MB, so they may take a while to download.
