San Joaquin County Filed Survey Map Index
Original San Joaquin County Map Index
The San Joaquin County Surveyor used to maintain a hard copy index of all the field survey maps in San Joaquin County. This index was also known as the "Dickey Book". The County Surveyor no longer maintains this index. The hard copy filed survey map index was replaced with the San Joaquin County Land Surveyor Records System. Although there are some benefits to the new online system of searching and downloading maps, there are also some problems with the way the online system has been set up.
Replacement San Joaquin County Map Index
I have started working on a new digital index that will mimic the old hard copy index. I'm currently creating ESRI Shapefiles of the filed survey maps that only appear in the new online system for searching and downloading maps, and are not found in the old hard copy map index. (You can download the digital pictures I took of the pages of the old index on the Maps Resources Page hosted at Redefined Horizons.)
Replacement San Joaquin County Map Index Limitations
The index I've created does not contain subdivision maps filed for cemetary plots or control surveys filed as record of survey maps. You can find a list of control surveys on the Land Surveying Monument Community Monitoring web page.

I'm releasing this data into the public domain, which means you can basically do what you want with it. You can use the link below to download the current ESRI Shapefile containing the filed survey maps I have indexed:
Index Data Download
I have also put together a 2010 Version DWG file and a 2000 Version DXF file with the same data contained in the ESRI Shapefile. These CAD files also contain the data from the TIGER files for roads, railroads, and hydrography in San Joaquin County. This allows the surveyor to view the maps in context to these other topographic features. You can download either CAD file using the following links:
Autodesk AutoCAD Version 2010 DWG file of Filed Survey Maps In San Joaquin County Not Currently In Dickey Book Hard Copy Index. (This file has embedded object data and text labels for the filed survey map polylines.)
Autodesk AutoCAD Version 2000 DXF file of Filed Survey Maps In San Joaquin County Not Currently In Dickey Book Hard Copy Index. (This file has text labels for the filed survey map polylines.)
If you are using an AutoCAD product and the version 2010 drawing file you will find the map type, book number, and page number of each filed survey map in the drawing is stored as object data. You should be able to see this object data when you look at the properties for the polyline that represents the map outline. This data may not be visible in all CAD software, or when using the DXF file above. The DXF file have text labels listing the map type, book, and page number for most of the maps. This is the same information stored as object data in the 2010 DWG file.

Help With The Index
If you would like to help me create and maintain the filed survey map index for San Joaquin County, please contact me.
2010-07-08 Update
38 filed survey maps have been added to the index. The Shapefile now includes 359 filed survey maps. This should include all of the record of surveys, parcel maps, and subdivision maps filed in San Joaquin County up to today's date. I have also added text labels to all of the maps in the CAD files, including the Chas Widdows maps. I hope to work over the next month or so on data quality issues, mostly cleaning up the labels in the CAD drawings.
2010-06-14 Update
The Shapefile now includes 321 filed survey maps. This should include all of the record of surveys filed in San Joaquin County up to today's date. I will be adding the parcel maps and subdivisions maps that are not yet included in my index over the next couple of weeks. Please note that I don't have text labels on any of the maps added as part of this update. That will be coming soon.
2010-05-04 Update
The Shapefile now includes 302 filed survey maps. This total includes about a 104 of the Chas Widdows Maps in Section A, Section 7, Section 19, and Section 31 of the Charles Weber Grant in Central Stockton. (All the Chas Widdows Maps in Section 7, Section 19, and Section 31 have been index. Section A is currently being completed.)
2010-04-28 Update
The Shapefile now includes 280 filed survey maps. This total includes about a couple dozen of the Chas Widdows Maps in Central Stockton.
2010-04-16 Update
The Shapefile now includes 166 filed survey maps. This total includes about a dozen of the Chas Widdows Maps in Central Stockton. We started indexing these maps now that the most recent filed survey maps are included in the index. We will continue work on the Chas Widdows maps over the next couple of weeks.
You can now download the index in one (1) of three (3) formats. The first format is as a AutoCAD Version 2010 Drawing file. This file includes only the map outlines with the map type, book, and page as embedded object data. The second format is as a Version 2008 IntelliCAD Drawing file. The third format is as a Version 2000 DXF file. The last two (2) formats do not contain embedded object data but do have text labels listing the map type, book, and page for most of the maps.
2010-03-24 Update
I have updated the ESRI Shapefile with the filed survey maps that you can download from this page. The Shapefile now includes 158 filed survey maps. This nearly completes all of the filed survey maps in San Joaquin County not in the hard copy Dickey Book Index. There are perhaps a half a dozen maps that I need to examine, and a half a dozen cemetary and control survey maps that will not be included in the index files but will be kept in a separate list.
